Are Any Diet Pills Safe?

A small study undertaken by the University of California is raising some more questions as to the safety of  “metabolism boosters”.

Compared with the placebo condition, Xenadrine boosted volunteers’ blood pressure by between 9 and 10 points, on average, the study found. In contrast, Advantra did not appear to affect blood pressure.

These products both contain Citrus aurantium (bitter orange extract). This ingredient is in the same class of stimulants as Ephedra. What is interesting about this small piece of research is that the increase in blood pressure appears to come from the combination of caffeine and Citrus aurantium (and other herbs). Advantra has 8 times the amount of synephrine than that of Xenadrine EFX.

Are any diet pills safe? Well, yes, some are, but you need to choose a diet pill after careful assessment since a wrong product can play havoc with your internal system and can even prove fatal.

Though you must choose your diet pill after careful assessment of its composition, medical approvals, known side effects etc., it is some very basic logic that anything that promises drastic weight loss is going to have some seriously negative side effects on your internal system. There is no magical cure that can help you get slim with the drop of a hat. You should be wise enough not to fall for anything that promises quick and fast weight loss.

Ephedra is notorious for playing with your cardiovascular system and can prove fatal. Alli, on the other hand, is an approved FDA treatment but even it is not free of side effects. Alli comes with a warning that you should reduce your fat intake to 15 grams per meal which is extremely hard to adhere to and if you do not stick to this limit you are likely to face some rather embarrassing side effects that include loose stools, urgent bowel movements that are difficult to control and gas with oily anal discharge. You might as well carry an extra pair of trousers if you decide to take this pill.
